diy cleansing powder

Clean your face with this daily for a glowing, flawless skin

Is your skin looking dull and lifeless? Are you suffering from acne? Is your skin dry from all those chemical laden cleansers?  Do you want a glowing, flawless skin? The single answer to all these questions — Orange peel powder! Did you know that orange peels have more vitamin C than the orange itself? Yes, those orange peels that go straight into your dustbin! The vitamin C and magnesium in these peels reduce free radical damage and give you a healthy, acne free, glowing skin while the calcium and potassium treat dry skin and keep it hydrated.Next time, when you are eating an orange, save those precious peels! Because, today i am going to tell you guys one easy peasy DIY recipe with orange peels to achieve the skin of your dreams!!

I think i am currently going crazy over natural cleansing grains and powders. In my last post, I shared a cleansing powder recipe for acne prone skin. Now, here comes another one! This one is much more simple with lesser and easily available ingredients! It is suitable for all skin types too!

You will need:

  1. Orange Peel Powder
  2.  Oats Powder

You can always buy orange peel powder from the market, but you can make it at home with very little effort. It just took me 2 minutes to make, so give it a try! All i did was to place orange peels in a plate near the window, whenever i ate an orange. I usually keep two plates — one to keep fresh peels and once they dry for a couple of days, i transfer them to the second plate and let them dry completely for a week or two. Once they are dry enough, blend away the peels! Make sure the blender is super dry and no traces of water in it. If you want to skip this whole thing and purchase the powder directly, check this one out.

Oats is not only a great option for breakfast, but also for cleaning your face. This gentle skin exfoliant absorbs dirt and impurities from the skin,  leaving  your pores squeaky clean. Making oats powder is much more easier than making orange peel powder. Just add some oats to the blender and blend it away! Same rule here —  “NO WATER”!!

Take a look at this pic to see how your powders should look like:

Now, mix both these powders in 1:1 ratio and store it in a glass container. Whenever you want to wash your face, take a little bit in your palms/bowl, mix a few drops of water to make a paste and apply it all over the face. Leave it for 5-10 minutes and wash it off by massaging in circular motions.

You can also use this as a face mask by mixing it with yogurt if you have oily/acne prone skin and milk if you have dry skin.

DIY face wash for acne

DIY Cleansing Powder for acne – filled with natural goodness

Helloo beauties!

New year is fast approaching . Have you guys made your 2017 resolutions yet?  Well, I have made some and my important resolution for this year is self care. No matter how busy or lazy I am, i decided to take out some time for myself everyday — to take care of my skin and health, to feed my skin  with healthy and natural ingredients. As a baby step towards my goal, i gave a break to my usual face wash and started washing my face with an all natural cleansing powder, which I am going to tell you now. I used to use this in my college days, but some how stopped using it on a regular basis.

Recipe time!!

DIY face wash

Mix all the ingredients and store in an air tight container. You can put this over your bathroom counter and no need to worry about the mixture going bad as all the ingredients are in powder form. Use this to clean your face instead of your regular face wash. If you have normal to dry skin, mix it with yogurt and if your skin is combination or oily, mix it with rose water. Leave it on for 20 minutes and wash off by massaging in gentle, circular motion.

Usually In the mornings, I am in a rush and so I leave it for only 5 – 10 mins. But in the evenings, I stick to 20 minutes.

acne face wash DIY

The ingredients used in this recipe are carefully chosen, keeping their acne curing benefits in mind.

Yogurt is a great natural cleanser. Lactic acid present in the milk is a naturally occurring Alpha hydroxy acid, which gently exfoliates the skin. People with acne are often suggested to eat foods rich in probiotics because the good bacteria in them maintain gut health and reduce inflammation. So, why not apply some of this awesome goodness topically? History says that Queen Cleopatra used to indulge in fermented milk baths. Is this one reason not enough for you to go rub some yogurt on your face now ? 😀

Any face wash meant for acne prone skin contains anti-bacterial properties and so does this one too!

Neem  is rich in anti bacterial properties and is a natural source of salicylic acid.

Basil is a medicinal herb which kills acne causing bacteria like no other cream on the market.

Turmeric and Sandalwood not only cure acne, but also impart a nice glow to your skin and gives you an even toned complexion.

Rose Water has astringent properties and is great for acne and scars.

NOTE: If you apply makeup, first remove it using a makeup removing wipe or oil  and then, follow up with this mask. This mask will not help in removing  makeup.

Try this  out and let me know in the comments how it worked for you. Happy new year! Keep smiling and stay beautiful!

skin pampering

My weekend pampering routine — Winter Edition

Hello Guys!!

Its been a long time i pampered my skin since I have been busy with moving, work and other stuff. On top of it, the sweater weather has made my skin dry and dull. Its high time i give my skin some love and this weekend, i finally did it. I was cleaning out my fridge and found the milk was going to expire. Instead of letting it go waste, I thought — why not make use of it to treat my moisture craving skin? Taking Queen Cleopatra as inspiration, I stepped into my bathroom. Its such an incredible feeling to “be back”!

I start with putting some raw honey on my face and hair. Honey is rich in anti-bacterial, anti fungal  properties and nourishes your skin and hair. It is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts moisture and holds the moisture in your hair and skin. Wrapping my hair into a bun, I am all ready for a nice bath soak.

To make this DIY bath soak, you just need milk and honey, which probably most of you already have in your kitchen. Under the running water, add milk (I used about half gallon, but its your choice. No exact measurement to it), 4 tablespoons honey and 2 tablespoons of mineral bath soak (optional, but highly relaxing to your stressed out muscles). And, girls!! Don’t forget to light up some candlesss! They give you such a spa-like and relaxed feeling, that though they are technically not a part of this recipe, they actually are!! To give an aromatherapy touch, I added some dried flower petals and 5 drops of lavender essential oil. Lavender oil is very calming and relaxing for the body. Play your favorite music and step inside the heaven (ahem, Bath tub, I mean!). Usually, store bought bath soaks may give you irritation if used for an extended period of time. But this one has no side effects. After-all, its milk and honey you guys!!

While I am still in the bath tub and fully soaked, I do some prep work for my mani and pedi  (#busylife ). I take a pumice stone and scrub the callus  under my feet and gently push back my cuticles using a cuticle pusher. Next, I wash off my honey dipped hair with lukewarm water and finish off with a gentle shampoo .

Once I am out of the tub, I remove the petals with a strainer, drain the water, spray the tub with my Green Works Multi-Surface Cleaner Spray and wipe off. Then, I carry on with my usual skin care routine and then with mani and pedi.

I am currently using this non-toxic, hydrating  nail polish remover from Pure Body naturals and I should say it is amazing. It does a dual job of nail polish remover and nail treatment. This acetone free remover strengthens the nails and softens the cuticle while effectively removing the nail polish. I usually put this on my fingers for 3-4 minutes and then using a cotton pad, remove my old polish.  I don’t always apply nail polish, but on days I do, I love to use Five free nail polishes from Julep. These nail polishes are free of sulphates, parabens, formaldehyde, toluene, dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde resin, and camphor. Don’t we all love when we find  natural products that are  effective and fit the bill at the same time?

Finishing off, I apply the Glycolic Face mask from Derma Nu. Packed with anti-oxidants, vitamin C and acne curing benefits, this mask is perfect for winters because it is very softening and gentle on the skin unlike many other clay masks.

Hello everyone! Do you love the refreshed feeling that you get by spraying a facial mist? Are you some one who doesn’t want to spend a lot on facial mists, but want to enjoy their benefits to the fullest? If yes, then this is for you!!

Often store-bought facial mists can be a bit expensive and a homemade spray mist sounds like the cheap and best option. In fact, the best part about the home made recipes is that, you have complete control over the ingredients you put in it. Moreover, no harmful ingredients!! Now, who doesn’t love that??

Today, I am going to share my favorite recipe with you guys, and you know what, this is suitable for all skin types and this recipe can be doubled up as a toner!! Also, you can carry it in your purse anywhere you go and give an instant touch up to your skin. You can even use this as a makeup setting spray!! Keep on reading!

Hi There!

How are you guys doing? We all love hair masks, isn’t it? And when it is a herbal mask with no harmful ingredients, I can not resist giving it a try. Did you guys hear of the ‘Bio Musk Root Fresh Growth Nourishing Treatment Pack’ from Biotique Botanicals? I absolutely love it and guess what, I am going to review it for you guys today!!

I used to be a big fan of Biotique when I was in India and somehow, stopped using their products after coming to US. Blame it on the lack of availability here in USA(I wish I knew it before that amazon sells them!!)  and also my thirst to try out other new products. Few months back, when I went to India, I got a few Biotique products and this hair mask is one among them.

biotique hair mask

The first thing that made me fall in love with this product is the ingredient list. Just an awesome combo of pure herbs and Himalayan water. Last year, we have been to Kashmir and OMG, the Himalayan water is very pure and fresh! Locals told us that the water coming from the Himalayas, flows over the medicinal herbs on these mountains on its way and therefore, has a ton of nutrients. See below picture for the ingredient list and what  each of these herbs does to your hair.

biotique hair mask ingredients

I can not really comment on the ‘intensive hair growth’ claim of this mask, but I can definitely say, this mask has improved the quality and health of my hair. Whenever I use this mask, I notice a visible difference in the texture and there is an added shine to my hair. This mask brings in a nice bounce to the hair and makes my hair smooth every time I use it. It is a great mask for all hair types, especially for people with dry and damaged hair. (3)

This 230 grams mask comes in a tub and can be easily scooped out. It has a herbal smell to it and some people may not like this smell, but for me, being a herb lover, I love it. The consistency is quite thick and you will not be able to apply it directly on to your hair. You need to mix it with yogurt or egg. I usually mix it with both for added benefits. I apply the mask all over my hair concentrating on the scalp, leave it for 30 minutes and then I am off to shower.

Tip: Whenever you are using such herbal masks, make sure you concentrate on your scalp because it is where hair growth starts. The root needs to be stronger and healthy to get a beautiful mane.

Just like Henna, this mask makes a mess  while washing your hair. Just remember to clean your bathtub and walls with water immediately after washing your hair and you should be all set. The mask has tiny granules in it and you will find some of these granules left behind in your hair even after shampooing. Try to remove as much as you can in the shower and the remaining granules should be gone when you are combing your hair.

Tip: Don’t use too much shampoo to remove the product from your hair. Instead, use lukewarm water to wash off the product and then, finish it off with a shampoo. Over Shampooing will kill the benefits of this mask.

Actually, these things did not bother me much because these are the common issues you find with most herbal masks and I say, the mess is totally worth it.  The one little concern I have is the quantity. The tub looks like a decent size but when you open it, you realize it is not filled completely with the product(only 3/4th filled). I use 2 tablespoons of this paste each time and this will last for about 4-5 uses for my hair, which is a little above the belly button. But again, I think it is decently priced, considering the quality. I got it for Rs. 250/- (around $5) from India and to my joy, I recently found that Biotique products are sold on too!! (doing a happy dance now). And now, I don’t have to ask my mom to ship them from India. Yes, I have to spend a couple of extra dollars when compared to the price I pay in India, but when you include the shipping costs from India, it will cost me the same. You can buy it here .

Will I repurchase this mask?Definitely, Yes!!

That’s about it guys!! Try it and let me know your feedback in the comments. Also, do share this post with your friends and family, because you know, sharing is caring!! See you all in my next post, till then, stay beautiful 🙂

get flawless, glowing skin with ice cubes

Hey guys!!

Today, I will be telling you how you can make your skin flawless and glowing like a celebrity – just by using Ice cubes!! Yes, Ice cubes are great for skin care and I am going to tell you how!!

Okay precautions first — Always remember not to use an ice cube directly on the face. Wrap it in a clean cotton cloth and you are all set to use it!!

An ice cube made with just water itself has a ton of benefits!!

1. Reduces Inflammation:

Getting ready for a party and a fresh-zit that popped up is ruining the look?? No worries, take an ice cube and rub it on the affected areas for 1-2 minutes. This not only reduces the redness but also the pain!!

2. Perfect Makeup Base:

Rub an ice cube before applying your makeup. This creates a smooth base for your makeup.

3. Reduces Puffiness:

My face tends to get puffy on some mornings and the first thing I do before getting ready on these days is to rub an ice cube all over my face. The cooling from the ice cube makes your skin cells contract and gives the appearance of a smaller face, by reducing the puffiness. This is great for puffiness around the eyes too!!

Also, I have some quick and easy ice cube recipes to target specific skin problems. Don’t worry guys, I have the shopping list with links included at the end!! Pick your favorite, make them on a weekend and enjoy them throughout the week!! Listening, busy ladies?? Now you don’t have an excuse to say that you have no time to take care of your skin!!

Beetroot and Milk cream ice cube:

If you are having dark lips, then you must try this!! Mix equal quantities of beetroot and milk cream, pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze. Rub this ice cube on your lips as many times as you can, in a day. You can even use it before stepping out of the door. The beetroot leaves a tint on your lips and milk cream keeps the dryness at bay. If you don’t have milk cream available, you can also add milk. Use beetroot powder if you don’t have fresh beetroot. There you go, your all natural lip tint!!

Saffron and Milk ice cube:

If you are having uneven skin tone, then this is for you!! Saffron has skin whitening and brightening properties and is perfect for getting rid of uneven skin tone. Milk moisturizes your face and the lactic acid in the milk is good for balancing out the skin tone. Take some milk in a bowl, warm it for a few seconds in a microwave and add some saffron petals to this. Leave it for at least 15 minutes and let the saffron release its color. Now pour this mixture into the ice cube and you are all set to use it once it freezes!!

Rose Water and Aloe vera Juice Ice Cube:

For this DIY, you can either use Aloe vera Gel fresh from the plant or you can use a store-brought Aloe vera Gel. However, I would always recommend to use the gel direct from the plant as it is more effective. Blend the Aloe vera gel to make juice of it. Mix equal quantities of Aloe Vera Gel and Rose Water to prepare this ice cube. Rubbing this all over your face can soothe and relieve your skin after sun exposure.

Coconut Water Ice Cube:

You can add them to your morning smoothies or you can rub it over your face for soft, glowing skin. Coconut water has tons of benefits for your skin!! It moisturizes you skin, great for anti-aging, reduces pigmentation and acne.

Neem, Tulsi and Multani Mitti Ice Cube:

Do you have an oily, acne prone skin and you are always tempted to wash it? Over Cleansing with soap/facial cleanser can do more harm than good. Don’t wash your face with a cleanser more than twice in a day. Next time you are tempted to over clean, try this instead of using a cleanser. Mix equal quantities of neem, Tulsi (basil), Multani Mitti (Fullers Earth Clay) and rose water. Pour it into an ice cube tray and let it freeze. Rub this ice cube on your face for 1-2 minutes, leave it on for a minute and wash off with cold water. Neem and Tulsi have anti-bacterial properties that help reduce acne and Fullers Earth Clay absorbs the excess oil.

Shopping List:

Beet Root Powder
Rose Water
Alovera Gel
Neem Powder
Tulsi or Basil Powder
Fuller’s Earth Clay

Give these a try, do come back and let me know your feedback. Also, share this with your friends, if you loved it!! See ya girls in my next post, till then stay beautiful!! 🙂

“I love my dark, pigmented lips” – said no woman ever!! Every one of us want soft, pink and kissable lips and we are ready to do anything to get them. But most of us don’t know the right things to do to get rid of lip pigmentation and we invest in expensive balms and treatments, which cost an arm and leg, but no results in the end. Frustrating, right??

A few months back, my lips turned really dark and these tips and tricks I am gonna walk you through in this post, have improved my lips condition greatly!!

Before I jump into the remedies, let’s have a talk about the reasons for dark and pigmented lips, so you can avoid doing these mistakes.

Smoking: This may come as a bad news to smokers out there, but yeah, you need to quit your smoking habit to rock those pink lips. After all, beauty is pain, baby!!

Caffeine: Okay, my dear coffee lovers, suck it up!! Excessive coffee consumption may be the culprit for your lip pigmentation!!

Dryness: Who would have thought that dry lips can be the reason for dark lips? But yes, it is true!! Your lips don’t have oil glands and so, they cannot produce oil on their own. You need to supply them with enough hydration from inside out to keep them moisturized. Dryness can lead to cracked and chapped lips, which result in darkness.

Anemia: I was guilty of this a few months back, but iron supplements saved my lips!!

Poor eating habits: Ladies, I know you all know this, but I am bringing this up as a reminder. What you put inside your body is what you look outside. Eat whole and healthy foods to bring out the best and beautiful you!!

Sun Exposure: Lips are sensitive parts and when over exposed to sun, they suffer from pigmentation.

So these are some of the basic and pillar steps you need to follow for soft, pink lips —

  1. Quit Smoking
  2. Limit Coffee breaks.
  3. Apply a lip balm with SPF during the day. Apply a deep hydrating and nourishing lip balm/treatment at night
  4. Consult a doctor and get your hemoglobin levels tested. Use the prescribed iron supplements consistently, if you are anemic.
  5. Cheating on your diet once in a while is okay, we are all human you know!! But try to eat as healthier as possible to stay fab!!

Once you adopt all the above mentioned habits, you will start seeing difference in your lips. In addition to these, start using these homemade treatments to achieve those kissable lips you have always dreamt of!!

6. Glycerin, Lemon Juice and Rose Water Treatment:

Glycerin is my go-to product whenever my lips feel dry. Lemon juice is a great bleaching agent and is excellent to clear out the dark spots/pigmentation. Roses are a great way to get rosy lips!! These magical flowers give a natural pink tint to your lips and decrease the pigmentation over a course of time. Apply this mixture on your lips every night.  If you have no time and want to stick to one single remedy, then this will be the one!! Yes, I saw the improvement in my lips, just after a couple of days of using this remedy. I am currently using NOW Foods Vegetable Glycerine and Gaia Purity Pure Moroccon Rose Water and I absolutely love them.

7. Beetroot and milk Ice cubes:

Mix some beetroot juice and milk in equal quantities and pour into an ice cube tray. Let it freeze and there you have, nature’s one of the best lip treatments!! Rub it on your lips as many times as you can throughout the day. Beetroot gives a nice tint to your lips and works magic on your pigmentation. Milk smooth-ens your lips and the lactic acid present in the milk helps in reducing the dark spots.

8. Lemon, Sugar and Honey Scrub:

Okay, I cannot stress enough on this – exfoliate, exfoliate and exfoliate!! Take a thin lemon slice and dip it in some sugar and honey mixture. Now rub the slice gently on your lips. Remember not to over exfoliate.

9. Orange Peel, Rice flour and Olive Oil Scrub:

Dried Orange peel  powder and rice flour treat the dark spots/areas on your skin and brighten up the dull skin. Mix these two ingredients with olive oil and scrub your lips with this mixture. You can make your own Orange Peel powder at home or if you don’t have time to do so, I recommend you guys to try this: Herbs And Crops Organic Orange Peel Powder

Okay peeps, there are a lot of other remedies for treating dark lips, but these are my current favorites!! Hope you like them and if it helped you, share this post with your friends 🙂

Hey beautiful!!

Since you landed on this page, I believe you are looking for coloring and conditioning your hair naturally. Well, welcome to the henna lovers community!!

Henna serves the purpose of coloring and conditioning at the same time. How awesome is that?? Today, I am gonna share with you the basic henna recipe for beginners, which is very easy to make.

Things you need are:

  1. Henna Powder
  2. Lemon juice
  3. Coffee powder
  4. Yogurt
  5. Egg
  6. Iron bowl.

All the ingredients are very easy to acquire. You can find henna in any Indian grocery store for a very cheap price!!

henna for beginners

Henna Powder:

Choose a good quality henna powder. Don’t believe the misconception that the greener the henna, the better. If you don’t have any herbal hair care powders with you, choose the henna that already comes with a mix of herbs. This way, you can reap the benefits of the herbs too!! I love the henna from Godrej Nupur Natural, and many of my friends use it too. It is one of the best quality hennas out there and we all love it. It contains 9 natural herbs – Brahmi, Shikakai, Aloe Vera, Methi, Bhringraj, Amla, Neem, Hibiscus, and Jatamansi. These herbs are great for promoting hair growth, treating dandruff, hair fall and make your hair healthy. I love to add my homemade herbs to henna, but when i am out of them, or on busy days, this is my go-to product.

Lemon juice:

Lemon juice is great for clarifying the scalp, impart shine and is a great dandruff fighter. Add Lemon juice or something sour like apple cider vinegar if you feel that lemon is too harsh for your hair. Adding something acidic can promote the dye release.

 Coffee Powder:

Caffeine in the coffee powder is great for hair loss. It promotes hair growth and adds dimension and shine to the hair. You can even boil the powder in the water and add the liquid, if you don’t want to feel the bits of coffee powder in your hair later. However, it easily comes out when you brush your hair. Coffee also gives a brownish tint to your hair.

Yogurt is a great moisturizing agent and it leaves your hair baby soft. So this is a must-have ingredient in your henna recipe!!

Egg is a great protein and your hair needs protein externally too!! If you are not a fan of egg, you can skip it. But it is always good to add a dash of protein in your weekly henna regimen!! If you are not comfortable with the smell of egg, then skip the yolk part and just add the egg white. But if you tolerate the smell, I recommend adding yolk also, for people with dry hair. But remember to wash it off properly with a mild herbal shampoo. You can also finish off  with an apple cider vinegar rinse to cut off the egg smell.

Vitamin E:

Vitamin E makes your hair shiny and supplies hydration. Break a capsule and add the contents to the henna mixture.

 Iron Bowl:

Finally, the main thing you need for henna preparation — the iron bowl!! Though it is not compulsory that you have to use an iron bowl, you find greater benefits on using it. Iron helps in oxidizing and imparts deep, rich color to your hair. Don’t have an iron bowl handy?? No worries, just grab some random iron pieces lying around the house like nails and throw them in your henna mix. It does the job!!

That’s it!! Your henna mix is ready. It is always suggested to let your henna sit for at least 6-8 hours before using it on your hair. This will help in dye release. Also, apply henna on a clean, washed hair. This will help in the nutrients getting absorbed better. After applying henna, wash it off with plain water and don’t do anything to your hair for 3 days. If you did not mix egg yolk, then your hair will not have any funky smell and you are safe to skip the shampoo. A mild herbal smell may remain, which I am absolutely okay with.  However, if you are not a fan, wash your hair with a mild herbal shampoo the next day or before you step outside the house.

Hope you guys found this beginner’s guide helpful and stay tuned to my blog, as I will be posting more advanced henna recipes. Have a beautiful hair, ladies!!
